Azam Hawari works on forest governance, critical minerals, and marine biodiversity under the Food, Oceans and Land Use (FOLU) program, with a current focus on developing and implementing sustainable forest management through legal support and capacity building with governments, CSOs, and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) in Indonesia. He also engages at the regional level with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to support the enactment, revision, and more effective implementation of forest governance laws.

Experience
Prior to joining ClientEarth, Azam worked at the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, focusing on responsible supply chains, reducing deforestation, environmental law enforcement, sustainable landscape governance, and strengthening the rights of IPLCs. For example, he supported the Government of Indonesia in shaping policies to enhance commodity traceability in line with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
He also worked at the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the United Nations in New York, where he supported the Mission’s work in the UN Second Committee on finance, macroeconomics, and the environment. Education
Azam holds an LL.M. in International Environmental Law with honours from the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, where he studied as a Fulbright Scholar. His thesis research examines how the EUDR and FLEGT mark progress in tackling global deforestation despite the political impasse over a binding international forest treaty.
He earned his LL.B. from Universitas Indonesia with a concentration in Environmental Law and has passed the Indonesian Bar Exam. He also studied European Law at the Faculty of Law, Mykolas Romeris University, as an Erasmus+ awardee.
