ClientEarth and Climate Policy Initiative Indonesia Sign MoU to Advance Renewable Energy, Just Energy Transition in Indonesia
JAKARTA, Indonesia, 6 August 2026 - ClientEarth, an international environmental law non-profit, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) with Climate Policy Initiative Indonesia (CPI), an analysis and advisory organization that specializes in finance and policy, to support initiatives by the government of Indonesia to achieve a net-zero economy by 2060.
The MoU aims to establish a framework to advance renewable energy deployment and just energy transition in Indonesia by strengthening financing, law, policy, regulation, and governance for the next two years.
As Indonesia ramps up its national plan to reach Net Zero Emissions by 2060, accelerating the renewable energy transition faces many obstacles and challenges, including time-consuming licensing processes, bureaucratic inefficiencies, substantial capital expenditure, and the legal uncertainty affecting projects’ financial viability.
The MoU recognizes the importance of a holistic approach involving knowledge fields of science, finance, law and governance. Realizing this will require sustained collaboration between government bodies, civil societies, and the private sector.
Under the MoU, ClientEarth and CPI will work together to assess relevant regulatory frameworks in Indonesia, evaluate the financial implications of potential policy scenarios, and develop evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, supporting a data-driven and collaborative approach to fiscal policy discussion.

ClientEarth is working together with CPI to advocate for reforms to policymakers and collaborate with like-minded stakeholders in society for collective action,” said Adam Weiss, Chief Programmes and Impact Officer of ClientEarth.
Another key focus of the collaboration is to support research, policy development, and analysis on renewable energy and just energy transition-related corporate finance and regulations, as well as to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange to address barriers to accelerating renewable energy and the just energy transition in Indonesia.
The collaboration will be carried out through various activities, such as joint research, studies, and analysis of legal, policy, financial, or economic matters. ClientEarth and CPI will also exchange ideas and thoughts to support the implementation of collaborative activities and to conduct joint stakeholder engagement through knowledge sharing, such as discussions, workshops, and seminars.
