ClientEarth and TransitionZero engage with Philippine regulators and civil society on energy transition

As a continuation of last year’s regulatory engagement, ClientEarth, with its technical partner, TransitionZero, continued its series of meetings with government and local civil society organisations in Manila last April 2024. The discussions centred on mechanisms to accelerate the energy transition including modernising the electricity grid, deploying offshore wind, and improving power supply agreement contracting.

TransitionZero also presented its open access tools (Coal Asset Transition and Model Builder) to further support government in its decision-making towards the energy transition.

“Our visit came at a time when the country experienced capacity shortages leading to brown outs in different areas.  This highlights the Philippines’ need to catalyse power generation investments as well as to undertake other improvements in the energy sector.  It was inspiring to continue conversations with various stakeholders, knowing there is significant interest and action to address climate change and contribute to the country’s energy transition, while ensuring that energy demand is met and impact on consumer prices are mitigated.”  said Tim Guanzon, Lawyer from ClientEarth’s Energy Systems, Asia team.
